The Police Department’s Annual Awards were handed out on Thursday, December 4th, as the Citizens Police Academy Alumni treated employees of the department to a barbeque dinner and Christmas Party.
The Alumni Association took this time to honor Robert Brunson as their volunteer of the year. Mr. Brunson passed away on November 2nd. He was a dedicated volunteer to the Alumni Association and police department. Robert had been working throughout the year at fundraisers and provided many hours of patrol service while battling cancer. His award was received by his adult children, Robin Phillips and Rodney Brunson.
The department asks for nominations each year for the awards of rookie officer of the year (less than 2 years’ service), the civilian employee of the year and the officer of the year. After nominations, employees of the department vote their choice. Chief Hundley remarked that there are a lot of personnel nominated each year as our employees recognize the contributions that all make.
Rookie of the Year went to Ethan Thompson. Officer Thompson has been with the department since November of 2013 and finished his initial training in August of 2014.
Civilian Employee of the year honors went to Angela Davis, one of the department’s 9-1-1 dispatchers. Ms. Davis has been with the department since September of 2010 and is a well-respected member of our communications team.
Officer Christopher Mayfield was named as the Officer of the Year for 2014. Officer Mayfield attended one of the first Citizens Police Academies held by the department as a civilian. He later took the civil service entry test and began his career with the department in July of 2012.
