Continuing Education in February at PJC

PJC Dragon FireAmong the many classes offered in February by the Paris Junior College Continuing Education is one on shaping and polishing gemstones. Also offered is a plumbing course meeting state requirements for plumbing contractors. Unless otherwise noted, all classes are offered in the Bobby R. Walters Workforce Training Center.

The Driver’s Education class, approved by the Texas Department of Public Safety, meets from 4 to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, Feb. 2-26.

Basic Cabochon Lapidary is an introductory course covering the use and maintenance of equipment, safety techniques, and hands on use of “top of the line” machines for sawing and shaping of rough gem materials to finished stones. The class meets from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, Feb. 2-25.

The Child Development Associate (CDA) training requires 120 hours of classroom and a verification site visit as set forth by the Council for Professional Recognition. The course format will be a hybrid format. The class will be half face to face and half online training. The class will meet from 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesdays, Feb. 3-May 21.

Kids Hurt Too, a seminar designed to help parents understand their children’s needs throughout the process of a divorce, is offered Tuesday, Feb. 3, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Microsoft Word Level 1 covers creating, saving and opening documents; editing documents; cut/copy/paste and find/replace; and basic formatting of text, paragraphs, tables and documents. The class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, Feb. 3-10, 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Phlebotomy Basic & Clinical will be offered from Feb. 3-April 28, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6 to 9 p.m. The course provides technical and clinical training to prepare for work as a phlebotomist in hospitals, physician offices, group practices, independent laboratories, health maintenance organizations and public facilities.

A Nurse Aide class will be offered from 5 to 9 p.m., Wednesdays and Thursdays, Feb. 4-April 1, and the clinical will meet Mondays through Fridays, April 6-15, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The class offers preparation for entry level nursing assistants. Basic Life Support Recertification for CPR certified cardholders is offered from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 9. The American Heart Association certifies the class.

Professional Truck Driving I is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, Feb. 9-20. This class offers hands-on skills development and instruction coordinated with the Department of Transportation.

Microsoft Excel Level 2 will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, Feb. 9-16. Learn more advanced techniques to analyze data, enhance charts and automate worksheet tasks.

The Initial Basic Life Support class on lifesaving skills for respiratory and cardiac emergencies will meet from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 11-12. The American Heart Association certifies the class.  The course is also offered on Saturday, Feb. 21, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Plumbing Continuing Education course is designed to help plumbing contractors fulfill their continuing education requirements with the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. The class meets Tuesday and Thursday, Feb. 13-15, 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The Heartsaver First Aid CPR & AED (automated external defibrillator) class teaches basic first aid and CPR/AED procedures, including first aid skills recommended by the Occupational Safety and Health Agency, to those with a duty to respond to a first aid or cardiac emergency. The course meets Saturday, Feb. 14, 8:30 am to 4 p.m.

Nurse Aide Skills Refresher is for students wanting to sharpen their Nurse Aide skills prior to their certification test. Students must register 48 hours in advance. The class is offered Monday, Feb. 16, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Home Repair Made Easy teaches how to complete home repairs such as hanging doors, repairing dry wall holes and caulking, as well as how to safely use common power tools. The class meets Saturdays, Feb. 21-28, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Professional Truck Driving II is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, Feb. 23-March 6. Basic and advanced skills drill and safe operating practices for shifting and backing are included in this class.
