Mobile Fusion: a Microsoft research project that can turn your phone into a 3D scanner

mobilefusionFrom Microsoft’s research labs comes a new project that can generate 3D models by scanning physical real world objects with only a smartphone camera.

In 2011, Microsoft researchers worked on a project called “Kinect Fusion,” a 3D scanning system that utilized the Xbox Kinect camera to convert physical objects into digital 3D models. At the time, the system required a 3D camera in addition to a powerful computer. However, technology has progressed to the point that your standard smartphone is capable of the computations needed to scan objects three-dimensionally in real time, and that usability is the focus of this new project, “MobileFusion.”

MobileFusion’s 3D scanning system needs only a standard smartphone to function. No additional hardware is required or even an Internet connection. All the system needs is a standard RGB camera available on most mobile devices.

MobileFusion uses the phone’s camera to take multiple images of the scanned object in a way that works similar to how the human eye functions. The system gives realtime feedback to the user, creating a rough 3D model in the camera’s view as you scan the object from all angles. Detail is given to the model over time, and scans can be completed in seconds.

The models MobileFusion creates are detailed enough to be utilized for 3D printing or augmented reality video games. Researchers even theorize about usefulness in the online marketplace, scanning and creating models for objects that users intend to sell online. The idea of being able to view products from every angle, observing all physical features and blemishes, before buying a product is a very practical one.

While Microsoft has not yet announced any official plans on availability, the system works with many types of mobile devices, including Windows Phone, iPhone, and Android.

Microsoft researchers will present MobileFusion in early October at the International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality.
