Senior Zay Gray won his weight class and Paris placed 6th overall at the Region 3, Division 2 (Class 4A schools) Powerlifting Championships held Thursday in Lindale.
In the process Gray qualified for the state meet to be held April 2 in Abilene where he should be a serious threat to place in the top 5.
Gray held a 5-pound advantage over runnerup Leo Rosales of Rusk in the 148-pound weight class after two of the three lifts (squat, bench press, deadlift). He beat Rosales by 20 pounds in the deadlift to finish with a total lift of 1,240 pounds to Rosales’ 1,215.
The Wildcats also placed 3-4 in the 165s by juniors JaKerian Brown and TD Williams. Paris also picked up 5th places from senior Quez Allen (220s), senior Dakota Helm (275s), and junior Byron Muse (superheavyweights).
The girls regional meet will be Saturday in Fairfield.
