The Paris High Wildcats have a chance to finish their pre-district schedule with a 4–1 record. The only thing standing in their way from accomplishing that feat is the Argyle Eagles. The Eagles enter the game with a 20-game winning streak and are the defending state champions.
This game will go along way in showing the Wildcats’ coaching staff where they stand going into district play. It’s not like the Wildcats have had the easiest four games to begin the season, though. Paris High has wins against Mt. Pleasant, Melissa and Palestine. Their only defeat came at the hands of Tyler-Chapel Hill; a game in which the Wildcats dominated on the stat sheet.
In order for the Wildcats to defeat the Eagles on Friday night and end that 20-game winning streak, they must play near-perfect football. The Wildcats had three plays of at least 70 yards called back last Friday against Palestine due to peannalties.
“We will lose,” head coach Steven Hohenberger told eParis when asked about making those mistakes against Argyle.
That’s part of the reason this team is so good. They capitalize on other teams mistakes.
“I’ve had people tell me that Argyle is down this year,” he said. “I don’t know what down is then. They’re on a 20-game winning streak, defending state champions and their 4–0 this year. They’re not down.”
It’s easy to think the Eagles are down this year, though, as opposed to last years’ championship team. Eight of their players from last year are playing Division 1 football at the collegiate level. However, the teams they have played and beaten this year aren’t any pushovers. Perhaps, that’s why they’re ranked number two in the state. Either way, the Wildcats have their work cut out for them as they host Argyle.
