A Paris Junior College sophomore student will have her directorial debut when PJC’s drama fraternity, Delta Psi Omega, puts on the play, “A Dollar,” starting Friday, October 17, at the Ray Karrer Theater on the PJC campus.
“I’m feeling really excited,” said PJC student and first-time director Laurent Salvatore. “I’ve tried to build a family with my actors and this play has let me know I’ve done the job. I’m looking forward to seeing how many people turn out.”
The one-act comedy, set in 1920, dwells on money as the root of evil. While traveling between towns, a group finds a dollar bill at a crossroad. One of the band members later gives it to another member who worships the dollar bill, causing conflict among the band.
While actors applied makeup and practiced lines to prepare for opening day, the director discussed how large moon glow bulbs would be used to light the scene on stage to simulate a night view.
To dress the play up in the spirit of the season, original characters have been recast for Halloween. They include a scarecrow, werewolf, witch, ghost, scary doll, a hobo, Frankenstein, Mrs. Frankenstein, and of course the dollar bill.
“This is my first time acting and I’m ecstatic to be performing on stage,” said PJC sophomore Andy Johnson, who plays the werewolf. “I’m really looking forward to having fun and the play is really funny.”
PJC sophomore Tori Hunt plays the character of a scary doll. Normally the lights and sound technician, Hunt said, “Wherever I am needed I am there. I like to learn every aspect of theatre.”
Admission is $5.00, or free for those with a PJC ID. Show times are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 19. For more information, call 903-782-0488 or email pjcdrama@parisjc.edu.
