On November 3, 1914, a baby girl was born in Deport, Texas, to R.L. (Bob) Denison and his wife Tommy Norrell Denison.  The baby had dark hair and dark eyes, evidence of her Native American ancestors, and an aunt named her Dovie Dee.

Dee passed from this life into the Kingdom of God on Sunday, November 10, 2013.  Friends and family will gather to honor her long life, 6:00-7:00 PM, Wednesday evening at Fry & Gibbs Funeral Home.  Graveside services will be conducted at Evergreen Cemetery at 2:00 PM, Thursday, November 14, 2013 with the Rev. Kyle Stephens officiating.

Dee was her mother’s little helper in rearing her siblings until she started to school.  She attended Minter School until the eleventh grade.  At that time, she moved to San Angelo to finish high school because of the Depression, living with the aunt who named her.  Then she moved to Denton and attended two years of college at Texas Women’s University before moving back to Minter to teach elementary school for three years.  Many years later she received her BA degree from East Texas State University in Commerce.

Dee married Blake Bonham in 1936 and moved to her present residence in the Unity community.  She was a very active partner with her husband as they farmed, raised chickens and livestock, ran a dairy, and had large gardens.  Their two daughters, Betty and Karen, were encouraged to follow their parents’ example of honesty, hard work, doing your best, and trusting the Lord.

Everyone who knew Dee knew she was a hard worker.  She had many well-kept flower beds, large vegetable gardens that led to freezing and canning. And a caged laying-chicken operation with a thousand hens.  She was an accomplished seamstress and a wonderful cook.  Along with that, she taught school at Central and North Lamar and taught Sunday school and was a departmental pianist at Immanuel Baptist Church.  She was one of Lamar County’s original twelve Farm Women of the Month Club members chosen by Mrs. Pat Mayes.  Dee was a member of the American Literature Club of Paris, a member of the Lamar-Delta Retired Teachers Association, and a member of Maxey Baptist Church.

Dee was preceded in death by her husband Blake, her parents, her daughter and son-in-law Betty and Fulton Stephens, and her siblings Paul and wife Ruth Denison, Carlys Dennison, Warren Denison, and Martha and husband Sam Spears.

Left to cherish her memory are daughter Karen and husband Wayne Beard; grandsons Craig Bailey of Sumner, Cary Bailey of Odessa, and Kyle Stephens and wife Marcia of Minnesota; granddaughters Kim Stephens of Minnesota, and Kara Stephens Lane and husband Mike of Direct.  Also surviving are great grandchildren Ashley Bailey of Washington; Seth Stephens and wife Kalyn, Daniel Stephens and wife Stacey; Anna Stephens, and Joseph Stephens, all of Minnesota; Logan, Tanner, and Kali Lane of Direct; and 3 great, great granddaughters.  Other survivors are brother Bob Denison and wife Ramona of Oklahoma; sister-in-law Betty Denison of Deport; and many nieces and nephews and their families.

Proverbs 31:10-30 are applicable to Dee.  She was a virtuous wife:  trustworthy, helpful, busy, a hard worker, a good provider, strong, dignified, wife, kind, and one who feared the Lord.

The family wants to give special thanks to Cindy Pearce, Pam Brummett, and Lynda Bryan who cared for Dee so lovingly and to Platinum Home Health and Platinum Hospice for their excellent care over a long period of time.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations made to the Maxey Baptist Benevolence Fund or Playground Fund c/o Curtis Adams, 4584 FM 38 N., Sumner, Texas 75486.  Donations can also be made to Lamar-Delta Retired Teachers Scholarship Fund c/o Barbara Eatherly, 405 CR 1330, Paris, Texas, 75462.

He was then stationed at Long Beach, California and flew many different new fighters and bombers from the West Coast and delivered them to East Coast bases to be used in the war effort in Europe.

Aud then returned to Lamar County with his wife Loretta Robinson Brown and bought a farm. Having a love and respect for the land, they worked very hard to make it successful. They operated a family dairy farm for many years. In 1962, Aud lost his right arm in a farming accident and through God’s help and much determination he overcame this adversity. In fact, he was honored with the “Comeback Farmer of the Year” award by Governor John Connally. Aud and Loretta exemplified people who were part of “The Greatest Generation.” Aud was also very involved in community activities and served as a member of the Central School Board in Sumner for several years.

Aud was a lifelong member of Maxey Baptist Church and served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher most of his adult life. He brought honor and glory to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, whom he loved supremely and served faithfully. He loved to study the Bible and applied its truths and often studied late into the nights. He had a heart for the lost and showed great concern for other people by helping them any way he could and visiting people in time of need. One way he showed his concern for others was by visiting prisoners in the Lamar Country Jail every Sunday for several years and also visited and taught prisoners in the Moore and Cole Units in Bonham. The “one-armed” man could identify with trials prisoners faced, because of his handicap and because his beloved wife was severely beaten in a home break-in that she had to overcome.

Aud exhibited extraordinary godly wisdom that became evident to those who knew him. He was a blessing to the pastors at Maxey Baptist Church and tried to encourage and assist them. In his latter years confined to a wheel chair, he loved to sing hymns of the faith when Mrs. Billy Bolton would come and sing to people in the nursing homes. He set a godly example for his family and others that will not be soon forgotten.

Pallbearers: Mike Julian, Jim Lassiter, Don Crutchfield, Willie Caldwell, Jeremy Crutchfield, and Harmon Graham. Honorary Pallbearers: Dewey Ausmus, Wayne Beard, and Vester Crutchfield.

He was assigned to an engineering company and served as a member of the initial occupational forces of Japan, arriving there in November, 1945, after an agonizing 2 week journey by ship. sailing for him!

Many happy times were spent with Jack & Mary Sue Dabbs, Bill & Kathleen Oakley, and Don & Elsie Ensey ranging from Sunday afternoon drives, that sometimes  lasted well into the night, to a trip across the western states and into Canada. His love of music ranged from the easy listening sounds of Jim Reeves, Marty Robbins and Chet Atkins, to Boots Randolph, gospel music, hymns, patriotic bands and yes, Bluegrass. He spent many hot, summer evenings at the Grant’s Bluegrass Festival in Hugo, Oklahoma usually taking friends and family with him. He loved to entertain family and friends and those many happy times with him will be sorely missed.
