Tommie Lou Slagle Ballard, 77, of Powderly, passed away Friday, June 21, 2013, at her residence with her husband, Edwin Dawson Ballard, and daughter-in-law, Tena Ballard, by her side.
Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 27th, at Bright-Holland Funeral Home with Minister Ryan Ballard officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 – 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Tommie was born Aug. 7, 1935, at Chicota, Texas to James Austin “Tom” and Nannie Lou (Duke) Slagle. Her happiest years were spent playing T.A.A.F. Volleyball and participating in archery shoots.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Emma Dean Maberry and brothers, James A. Slagle and Ralph Slagle.
Survivors include her husband, Edwin Dawson Ballard, two sons, Edwin Kirk Ballard and wife Beverly of Paris and Kriss Ballard and wife Tena Renee of Bells, grandchildren, Britany Beth (Ballard) Creamer & husband Tyler of Paris, Caleb Kirk Ballard of Paris, Tom Kody Ballard of Bells and Tifani Renee Ballard of Bells, two sisters, Doris Burton of Paris and Mary Sue England of White Oak, three brothers, Jody Slagle, Buck Slagle and Ray Slagle all of Paris.
Tommie became a Christian at an early age and attended Baptist churches in Chicota and Garretts Bluff, and in 1953, she became a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Clardy and remained a member there the rest of her life.
She pursued rock and arrow head hunting as well as trail walking and animal and bird observation.
Casket bearers will be: Kody Ballard, Caleb Ballard, Wayne Slagle, Larry Slagle, Terry Slagle and Wes Dollins. Honorary bearers will be: Joe Slagle, Jessie Slagle, Reggie Slagle, Jake Slagle, Mike Slagle, Brandon Slagle, Gene Slagle, Jeff Slagle, Jimmy Arnold, Bradley Slagle, Robin Ballard, Lance Ballard, Mike Vaughan, Perry Duke, Eddy Simmons and Lawrence Ray Price along with her past volleyball teammates.

James “Jim” Walter Briscoe, 65, of Powderly, threw his hat for the final time on Saturday June 22, 2013 at his residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday June 26, 2013 in the chapel of Starrett Funeral Home with Rev. Chad Lamb officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Long Cemetery, where he will rest beside his beloved Gale.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Jim was born May 19, 1948 in Paris, a son of Jack and Mary Katherine Carroll Briscoe. He was a graduate of East Lamar High School and attended Paris Junior College. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, serving in Chu Lai with 198th Brigade, Fifth Battalion, 46th Infantry Americal Division, and during the Tet offensive he was injured in the conflict. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal with V, for Valor. He left the military with the rank of Sergeant/E5, returning to Lamar County to begin a long career in the trucking industry. He was a partner in Midcoe Transportation from its inception in 1988 until 2006. Along with his son Doug established Shining Star Brokerage in December, 2006, where he was currently an integral part of its daily operations. One of his greatest joys was drag racing, and he enjoyed over fifteen years of participation in that sport, making many good lifetime friends.
Jim married Gale Smyers on September 2, 1967 in Powderly. She preceded him in death at the untimely age of 56 on March 15, 2006.
In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Dorothy Lou Briscoe Morgan.
Left behind to cherish his life and memory are two sons, Brad Briscoe of Paris and Doug Briscoe and wife Angie, of Brookston; a daughter, Jennifer Sawyer and husband Eric, of Blossom; three grandchildren, Jake Briscoe, Caleb Sawyer, and Madisyn Gale Sawyer; three brothers, Robert Briscoe and wife Mary, of Detroit, Bill Briscoe and wife Nita, of Reno, and Scott Briscoe and wife Cindi, of Powderly; a sister, Jolene Stellpflug and husband Leo, of Paris; two aunts, Bobbie Poer, of Slaton and Clara Jo Lane, of Lubbock; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends whom he loved.
Named to serve as pallbearers are Randy Locke, Johnny Exum, Carl Lucas, Marty Hicks, Mike Middleton, Jimmy Newsom. Honorary pallbearers are Reggie McDowra and Phillip Lamb.

Mary H. Lindsey, 88, of Reno, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2013.
Services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 26th at Bright-Holland Funeral Home with Pastor Joe McWilliam, Pastor Esequias Perea and Elder Andy Cobb officiating. Burial will follow in Providence Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 – 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Lindsey, the daughter of Abram Boddie & Agatha Warren Herbert, was born May 25, 1925, in Atlanta, GA.
On July 6, 1958, she married David Scott Lindsey in Atlanta, GA, building forty-six years of family and memories before his death on Dec. 22, 2004.
She was a faithful member of Paris Seventh Day Adventist Church where she served as treasurer for over forty years.
For a number of years she worked for R. L. Polk gathering information for the Paris City Directory, and she also worked for Olen Mills. One of her greatest pleasures in life was volunteering at St. Joseph’s Hospital where she continued to volunteer through the hospital becoming Paris Regional Medical Center. Her volunteer years spanned twenty-eight years. Following the 1982 tornado in Paris Mary worked countless hours with the Adventist Community Services and the American Red Cross serving families affected by the disaster.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Virginia Livingston.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen Kern & husband Geoff of Paris and Cheryl Lindsey of Reno, two granddaughters, Stephanie Kern of Denver, CO and Shannon Kern of Lewisville, her special family friends, Ben Holland and Sherry Phipps, numerous nieces & nephews and a plethora of friends.
The family would like to extend appreciation to the caregivers who cared for their loved one throughout the four years following her illness.
