Edwards Walters MusgroveThree North Lamar High School students earned state rankings, placing in the top ten at the UIL State Student Congress Tournament held on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin the week of January 11 to 13.

Junior Kay Edwards placed 4th, Junior Jordan Walters placed 8th, and Junior Steele Musgrove placed 10th.  S

ixty of the top Student Congress competitors from around the State of Texas competed in 12 hour sessions for two days debating legislation they had written for the contest.  Coach for North Lamar’s team is Kristi Hodgkiss.

The UIL Student Congress contest requires students to play the role of a Senator or Congressman and follow the rules of the United States Congress.  The students write original legislation, present it in the Senate or House of Representatives, and debate its merits.

The more successful the students are making their speeches, the more points they earn.  The University Interscholastic League began the Student Congress three years ago, and North Lamar Student Congress competitors have advanced to the state level all three years.
