Local businessman Jimmy Hickman passes at 87

hickmanPNParis native James Allan Hickman died March 3, 2013, in Paris Regional Medical Center.  Born in Paris, Texas to James Franklin Hickman and wife, Rebecca Riggs Hickman, on May 17, 1925, after graduating from Paris High School he continued his education at Paris Junior College and The University of Texas in Austin. He returned to Paris to join his father and grandfather as a partner in Hickman Insurance Agency.  Jimmy married his wife, Martha, April 4, 1969, in Dallas Texas.  In 1981 he closed Hickman Insurance Agency and spent many enjoyable hours on the golf course at Paris Golf & Country Club making two holes-in-one. Hickman and his wife cherished their trips to Santa Fe, NM and other spots of interest but always like coming home to Paris.

Hickman was a member of Central Presbyterian Church his entire life attending from his cradle roll days and joining Central on November 22, 1936, where he later served as a Deacon and Member of the Trustee Committee.

Jimmy enjoyed the company of his daily morning and mid-afternoon coffee groups in recent years.   In earlier years he was a member of the Lions Club, of the first Paris Toastmasters’ Club and a longtime member of the Independent Insurance Agents of Paris. He had served on the Advisory Board of Christus St. Joseph’s Hospital and on the Board of Evergreen Cemetery Association.

Mr. Hickman was preceded by his parents, in-laws, several cousins and many close friends.  He is survived by his wife Martha Hickman, a special cousin Eleanor Jackson and her husband, DeForrest Jackson, of Gainesville, GA, his wife’s sister, Nell Strother, and her husband Bill Strother, of Cedar Hill, TX and many special longtime friends.

Formal visitation will be held at Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home Tuesday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with the funeral service being conducted by Rev. David Darrow at Central Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon and burial in Evergreen Cemetery.

Named as pallbearers are Clifton Fendley, Matt Frierson, Sims Norment, Carl Cecil, Richard Hunt, Greg Wilson, Donald Lewis and Roger Courson.  Honorary pallbearers are members of his coffee groups, choir practice group and longtime golfing friends.

Memorials are requested to Central Presbyterian Church, Goodland Academy or a charity of your choice.
