Violet Smith0001Violet Martha Smith, 87, of Paris, went to be with her heavenly Father on Wednesday, April 3, 2013, with her family at her bedside.

Bright-Holland Funeral Home has scheduled services for 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 6th, at Highway Full Gospel Church with Rev. Dverle Archer and Rev. Harvey Blackshear officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Smith the daughter of Earvin & Maudie Martin Payne, was born Feb. 18, 1926, in Muskogee, OK.

She married Garvin Smith on March 7, 1946, in DeQueen, AR,  building forty-two years of family and memories before his death.

Violet lived a full life, putting God first, then her husband, children and family. She was a faithful member of Highway Full Gospel Church.

Survivors include her children, Geney Louise Simpson, Maudie May Lick & husband Johnny and Larry Michael Smith & wife Patsy all of Paris, grandchildren, Geney Lynn Simmons & husband Terry, Michael Simpson & wife Tracey, Cheryl Michael & husband Lonny, Penny Burnett & husband Billy and Larry Mack Smith, Jr. & wife Tori, great grandchildren, Eric Simmons & wife Dallas, Gena Morrison & husband Bradley, Nicholas Landrum, Jalee Burnett, Braley Burnett, Cutter Smith, Chris Michael, Zach Spangler and Seth Spangler, great great grandchildren, Kylee Brooke Morrison, Peyton Kay Simmons, and Paisley Dawn Simmons, sisters-in-law, JoAnn Conley,  Smitty Payne and Lyda Jean Bourland along with numerous nieces, nephews & a host of friends.

Casket bearers will be: Michael Simpson, Larry Smith, Jr., Eric Simmons, Nicholas Landrum, Terry Simmons and Billy Burnett.

cookPNLila Jean Cook, 90, of Paris, died at Paris Regional Medical Center, Wednesday, April 3, 2013.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church at 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 6, 2013 with Father Morgan White officiating.  Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.  A Rosary and visitation is set for 6:30 PM, Friday evening at the church.  Fry & Gibbs Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Lila Jean Ayres was born October 4, 1922 in Ft. Smith, Ark. to parents William Henry & Alta Marie Ayres.  In 1932 she moved with her family to Paris, Tx. where her father established Ayres Department Store.  She graduated from Paris High School and Paris Junior College and North Texas State Teachers College in Denton.

She married Phillip Parker Cook of Syracuse, N.Y. in 1946. They met while he was stationed at Camp Maxey.  She was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church where she taught pre-school classes and was an active member of The Altar Society, having served in every office of the organization including two terms as President.

She was a stay-at-home mom during her children’s early years always devoting time to their music, scouting, dancing and school activities.  After many years of working when needed at Ayres, Inc. she later took over as store credit manager.  She enjoyed golf, swimming and was a former member of The Round Table. She was an active volunteer at St. Josephs and Christus St. Josephs Hospitals, also Essent and Paris Regional Medical Center.  She enjoyed years of activities with Prime Time, especially being one of the original preforming line dancers.

Surviving children, Phillip Henry Cook and wife, Carol of Austin, Tx. Charles Mac Cook of Austin and Houston, Tx. Craig Couch of Austin, Tx, Alta Marie Ballard and husband Robert of Seattle, WA.  Grandchildren are Carrie Bray and husband Dudley of Centerville, OH, John Cook and wife, Jennifer of Boulder, CO., Douglas Barrett of Austin, Tx., Jennifer Swart of San Antonio, Tx. and Robert Ballard of Seattle, WA.  Dear sister Callie Shelton of Paris and seven great grandchildren, Austin Barnard, Makenna, Lila, Jack and Henry Cook, and Violet and Garrett Charles Swart, special nieces and nephews of her sisters and brother’s families.

Preceded in death by husband, Phillip Parker Cook, infant son George Kevin, Sister Mary Alice Wallace, brother Bill Ayres, sisters-in-law Mary Ayres and Virginia Ayres, brothers-in-law, Ladd Wallace and Joe Shelton.

Pallbearers will be Phil Cook, John Cook, David House, Brad Shelton, Charles Cook, Dudley Bray, and Craig Couch.

Memorials may be made to St. Vincent dePaul Society in care of OLVC, or Phillip P. and Lila Jean Cook Scholarship Fund at Paris Junior College, 2400 Clarksville St. Paris, Tx. 75460.

vaughanPNBobby Lee Vaughan, 76, of Powderly passed away Thursday April 4, 2013 at Legend Healthcare. Funeral services will be held at Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home 2:00 p.m. Saturday April 6, 2013 with Bro. Chris Kelley officiating. Burial will follow in Red Hill cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday 7-8 p.m.

He was born in Lamar County on December 4, 1937 a son of James Alton and Edwina Dunmon Vaughan. He married Brenda Day on April 1, 1961 at Bounds Baptist Church. He retired from Babcock-Wilcox Co. after 32 years of service and was an inactive deacon at Bounds Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Blossom Masonic Lodge #303, served in the Powderly Volunteer Fire dept. for 40 years and was a member of the Lamar Co. Sheriff’s Reserve for 27 years.

He was preceded in death by his Parents; brothers, Jimmy and Gary Vaughan and a brother-in-law, Carl Hopkins.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years Brenda Vaughan; daughter Cindy Lee Vaughan; brother Joe Vaughan and wife Doreen; sister Juanita Hopkins and sisters-in-law Mary Vaughan and Delma Vaughan.

Pallbearers will be Tim Parks, Mike Smith, Zackery Smith, Gary W. Vaughan, Donald Vaughan, and R.L. Douglas.

He always said the Lord came first and then his family. He loved working for God and people. He was always helping someone work on their tractors or doing something in his shop for someone. He loved his wife and his daughter most of all.
