These boxes are being collected this week and will eventually reach the hands of needy children around the world.
“Operation Christmas Child” is an effort created by Samaritan’s Purse, which is an evangelical Christian humanitarian and missions organization, providing aid to people in physical need all around the world as part of Christian missionary work.
A copy of The Gospel goes into each shoe box, along with many other gifts picked by those that stuff the box. These little boxes can change the lives of many, and the long time effort proves that there is power in a simple gift.

Paris Rotary Clubs Unite for Service
The Monday and Friday Rotary Clubs in Paris have merged into one club to be known as the Rotary Club of Paris United, which will meet on Mondays.
Rotary International is a service organization committed to local and international community needs. With its motto of, “Service Above Self,” it continues to be an esteemed organization where professionals with diverse backgrounds can exhange ideas and form meaningful relationships.
Locally, the Rotary Club of Paris began in 1916 and throughout its vibrant history has met on Fridays. In the 1970’s, in an attempt to accommodate a growing number of Rotarians, the Rotary Club of Greater Paris was formed, and met on Mondays.
Both clubs have a rich history of serving local and international communities.
One of the Rotary’s most known endeavors is to eradicate polio worldwide. Beginning in 1979 with a project to immunize 6 million children in the Philippines, Rotary has nearly completed that goal. By 2012, only three countries remain polio-endemic, which has decreased from 125 countries in 1988.
The Monday and Friday Clubs began meeting several months ago to discuss differences and commonalities and with the sentiment of serving Paris and Lamar county more fully, eventually decided to unite both clubs. Both clubs together are now known officially as Rotary Club of Paris United. The club is keeping the same charter date and number of the original 1916 club.
Presently, the Rotary Club of Paris United continues all service projects from both groups including dental screenings, where dentists travel to area schools and provide needed free sealants to every second grader in Lamar county at no cost. Other services include a dictionary project that provides dictionaries to elementary students throughout the county.
The Rotary Club of Paris United will continue to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to service by also providing gifts for the Salvation Army, rotary scholarships to Paris Junior College, as well as sponsoring an annual youth leadership academy.
The 31st of December will be the official meeting of the club as Rotary Club of Paris United. The club now meets on Mondays at the Paris Junior College Ballroom.

Citizens Police Academy Class of 2014 Graduates
After 10 weeks of study and interaction with officers of the Paris Police Department, 23 citizens completed the 7th Citizens Police Academy held since 2009.
Beginning on September 16th, the students attended weekly classes held on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 9 PM. During the course, students also rode out with police officers on patrol and made a trip to the firing range. Instructors for the course were all working officers in the department and did include the Lamar County Attorney, Gary Young and Asst. City Attorney Stephanie Harris. Topics included the history of the department and law enforcement in general, use of force, patrol, criminal investigations, school resource officers, 9-1-1, communications, records, victims rights and other services provided by the department.
The Citizens Police Academy is a community outreach program. The course and mainly the interaction with the officers allow both officers and citizens to gain a better understanding of how law enforcement works in our community.
Paris Police Chief Bob Hundley commented, “For these citizens to commit a little over 40 hours of their time over 10 weeks to participate in this program is extraordinary. We appreciate not only their time, but their interest in law enforcement and our department”.
After the academy finishes, participants can join an alumni association and pursue volunteer service with the department for the community, the Citizens on patrol program.
