Paris_Lakes_13After years in the making and a constant wonder surrounding the proposed new development on Paris’ southeast Loop, citizens are now seeing some movement, as the project is beginning the initial phases of construction, and it appears that the years of work to get to to this point have paid off.

On Friday, the Paris Lakes development team and a crowd of citizens, media and city officials celebrated a ground breaking ceremony, officially (and publicly) marking the beginning of the estimated $300 million project.

Developer and principal, Ron Parker, told the crowd about the beginnings of the project, when it was merely an idea, thanking former PEDC director, Steve Gilbert, for putting the idea in his head about 3 1/2 years ago. Since then, Parker said, Tom Dunning has played a major role in the development of this project. Dunning, who was formerly chief operating officer of PRMC, is the director of medical operations for the Paris Lakes development.

Clearly showing the time and hard effort that has been put into Paris Lake thus far, Parker emotionally told everyone, “…it’s been a long time coming.”

Initially, the development will include an ambulatory surgery center, that is soon expected to be followed by a hospital, office space, retail buildings, a accompanying hotel and residential development, however Parker told the crowd that all the facets are expected to be worked on at the same time, so the project’s construction could be faster than originally anticipated.

This initial phase is also expected to include senior and assisted living facilities. Later phases of the project will include a lighted 9-hole golf course, a retirement community, senior living center and memory center.

While some some buildings are expected to be ready within 9 months to a year, overall this will be a multi-year development project, bringing hundreds of jobs to the area and employing contractors and construction workers for several years.

Denison – For the second week in a row, the Paris Wildcats jumped on their opponent early. Last week, Paris shocked the seventh-ranked Van Vandals and this week it was the Sanger Indians. Before the action really got started, Paris was up 21-0 on the Indians. Sanger came into the game with a 9-2 record. Their only losses came to the hands of Argyle and Ranchview. The Wildcats came prepared to play though as they handed Sanger their third loss of the season: 28-16.

Sanger took the opening kick off and went 48 yards down the field. When the drive stalled, though, they opted to try a 39 yard field goal into a gusting south wind which sailed wide. Paris took over at their own 22 yard line. After losing a yard on his first carry of the game, Quez Allen broke the second one 79 yards for a touchdown. A defender at midfield tried bringing him down, but Quez was able to shake him off before finding the endzone.

Sanger’s next possession would result in the only turnover of the ball game. After Peyton Howard caught the ball at the 20 yard line, Diarva Brown jarred it loose. Ty Gray was able to recover it for the Wildcats, setting up the offense at the Sanger 19 yard line. Five plays later, Allen once again found the endzone. With five minutes still remaining in the first quarter, Paris was now up 14-0.

Sanger’s next possession would be a theme for the Wildcats defense as Sanger would only gain one yard and have to punt. With 20 seconds to play in the first quarter, Allen would find KD Scott on a slant route. Scott would easily get into the endzone, giving the Wildcats a 21-0 lead.  Paris High wouldn’t score again until 2:19 to play in the game, but they wouldn’t need to as the defense stepped up.

The Wildcats defense suffocated the Indians all night long. Led by Senior Linebacker Jordan Williams, Paris High caused the Sanger offense to not gain any yards on 13 different plays, with 10 of those going for negative yards. The Indians had four possessions in which they gained no more than two yards. One of their possessions started at the Paris High 25 because of a bad punt. The Wildcats defense caused Sanger to lose 23 yards and turn the ball over on downs at the 48.

Sanger’s only two touchdowns came on a drive of 32 yards and a 97 yard kickoff return. Sanger only had 208 yards of total offense.

“[Our Defense] backs were against the wall. They were backed in a corner a couple times there in the third quarter,” Coach Steven Hohenberger said about his defense after the game. “They made huge stands. We have a great defensive staff, starting with Terry Anderson who puts the players in a good position.”

One of those stands Hohenberger referred to was when Sanger got the ball down to the eight yard line. Facing a first and goal from the eight, the Wildcats defense stood tall and stopped the Indians on four plays to turn the ball over.

“It’s the senior role to lead the team,” Jordan Williams said about his performance. “I feel like I’ve got to step up and lead my boys on defense in a positive way.”

With the win, the Wildcats set up a rematch with District 7-4A-1 rival Liberty-Eylau. Paris defeated LE in their first district game of the season at Wildcat stadium. However, LE went on to win the district title and hasn’t lost since. The game will be played Friday, Nov. 28 at 7:30 in Mt. Pleasant.

Antique Fair nets $8,000 for downtown restrooms

The Paris Downtown Association (PDA) has donated the proceeds of the recent 4th Annual Paris Antique Fair to Paris Texas Main Street bringing its public restroom project $8,000 closer to reality.

The restroom project ties into the $800,000 First United Methodist park project announced earlier this year. While the Methodist Church has secured pledges to build the park across from the church, the public restrooms that would support it would be funded, built and maintained by the City of Paris through Main Street if donations could cover the initial construction estimated at $45,000.

Public restrooms have been of particular interest to the downtown merchants who often lack appropriate facilities for public use or have safety concerns.  Sulphur Springs’ attractive and successful public restrooms in their thriving downtown have demonstrated that this project can be accomplished in a very beneficial way.

Donations have come from individuals, grants, and multiple fundraisers include Main Street’s 6’d event and now the Paris Antique Fair, bringing the total funds raise to about $35,000.

The Antique Fair, now in its fourth year, was relocated from the Lamar County Fair Grounds to its new home in the Gibraltar Hotel downtown this year.  The event was originally conceived and put on by Janet and Keith Green.  Janet owned a local antique store and wanted to bring an antique fair to Paris.  “Initially we had 65 vendors, which grew by the third year to over 85 vendors.”  But an opportunity arose to buy out Randy Radar and rebrand Gene the Jeweler as her new endeavor  Carriage House.  This meant that Janet needed to focus her attention on her new business rather than the Antique Fair.

“A lady approached me about taking over the event and moving it to another town,” Green told eParisExtra.com, “but I wanted it to remain here and continue to bring people to Paris.”  So Green offered the event to Paris Downtown Association.  PDA tentatively agreed provided the event could be relocated to downtown.  The Gibraltar turned out to be a perfect fit thanks to the generosity of its owners Suzy and Chip Harper.  “We’ve already had people sign up for multiple booth spaces for 2015,” Green noted about the success of the new location.

With a lot of active leadership from PDA members from Green, Robin Weemes, Kari Daniel, Melissa Gordon, Melissa Wickersham and many, many volunteers, the event was a great success enabling PDA to donate $8,000 to Main Street to support the downtown public restrooms.

“Providing public restrooms in downtown Paris has been a goal of the Paris Main Street Advisory Board for several years. I am so pleased that with the efforts of both Main Street and PDA we are very close to reaching our goal of $45,000,” said Jill Drake, Chair of the Main Street Advisory Board.

“A lot of behind the scenes work went into this donation. Main Street is very grateful to the Paris Downtown Association for their donation and for bringing a wonderful event like the Paris, Texas Antique Fair into downtown’” added Cheri Bedford, Paris Main Street Coordinator.

“Polly the Food Snob” Book Signing at Olive Paris

Polly Food SnobA book signing for “Polly The Food Snob Meets Olive Paris” is scheduled for Saturday, November 29, from noon until 7:00 at Olive Paris, located at 115 S. Main Street in downtown Paris, Texas.

“This is my second cookbook,” says Polly Holladay, “and this time the recipes within feature products sold at what’s become my favorite culinary haunt: Olive Paris. There are so many deliciously unique olive oils and balsamic vinegars, as well as a vast array of other specialty food items available there. The premise for writing this cookbook was to provide ideas and simple directions to those who aren’t quite sure how to incorporate them into their own menu planning. My hope is that this will be a springboard for everyday culinary imaginations to flourish, as well as for future cookbook projects based on other gourmet items that owner, Robyn Zimmerman, carries.”

Recipes including Sesame Ginger Pork Fettuccine Salad, Orange Drop Cream Cheese Bread, Holiday Pumpkin Cream Topped Cinnamon Nutmeg Pasta, Polly’s Loaded And Spiced Apple Pie and more, will make a believer out of the most skeptical novice that delicious dishes don’t have to be difficult.

She continues, “I’ve noticed and been impressed with how some of the area businesses such as Olive Paris, Paris Bakery, 107, and That Guy’s Coffee, support one another, carrying each other’s products and encouraging others to patronize each other’s establishments. It’s an honor to have my cookbook play a small part in that practice, as I, too, take note of or highlight those same businesses and  products, as well as their contact information. It brings a sense of community that others can appreciate and, hopefully, inspires expanded participation.”

Just in time for the holidays, “Polly The Food Snob Meets Olive Paris” can be made a part of unique gift basket combinations by including some of the Olive Paris products needed to prepare one or more of The Food Snob recipes. or paired with a gift certificate so recipients can make their own selections.

This new cookbook retails at $16.95, but will be available that day only for the special sale price of $15. And her previous work, “Cooking With Polly The Food Snob”, drops down to $10 to finish out the season.

Besides time visiting with customers and signing copies of the book, Polly will also be offering samples of her creations as well as a cooking demonstration in the upstairs loft.

“Come and enjoy a fun filled event at Olive Paris. And, bring the kiddos, because I hear that a certain “Jolly Old Fellow” is making his appearance, as well. Don’t worry. I have the cookies covered!”

Tips to Prevent Vehicle Theft During the Holidays

$
0
0

car theifThe holiday season is upon us!  And just as you prepare for Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and visiting the malls and shopping centers, thieves are preparing to shop, too . . . . . in your vehicle!

The Texas Auto Burglary and Theft Prevention Authority (ABTPA), a division of the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, reminds drivers that a vehicle is burglarized every two minutes and stolen every eight minutes in the state. These crimes can escalate during the holiday season when drivers frequently shop for gifts, and travel to visit friends and family.

During these times, drivers are more likely to leave belongings within view inside vehicles.  The hustle and bustle of the season may also cause drivers to become negligent in locking doors and taking keys. To make matters worse, a thief won’t necessarily stop with taking your vehicle and the things inside.  They may also look for personal documents and items that can help them steal your identity or gain access to your home.  In other words, the theft or burglary of your vehicle may simply be a gateway to the commission of additional crimes.

“Auto burglars are more likely to scout malls, shopping centers, entertainment venues, hotels, and other business parking lots this time of year looking for opportunities to break into vehicles,” said Michelle Lanham, program coordinator for ABTPA’s Reduce Auto Theft in Texas (RATT) public awareness task force at Denton Police Department.  “Drivers need to understand that almost anything they leave inside their vehicles can be valuable to a thief.  And when vehicles are left unlocked and unattended, drivers are inviting thieves to walk away with everything they see inside, which often includes gifts, purses, wallets, packages, electronics, suitcases, garage door openers, keys, and personal information,”

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, thieves committed 214,294 acts of vehicle burglary and stole 65,671 vehicles in Texas during 2013.  In some jurisdictions, more than half of the vehicles stolen had unlocked doors and keys left inside.  But drivers can avoid becoming part of these statistics.  The ABTPA and its 29 vehicle crime task forces in Texas promote a basic vehicle crime prevention philosophy:  “Protect It, It’s Yours.”

Motorists should practice three basic safety tips to help prevent theft and burglary during the holidays and throughout the year:

1. Remove belongings from view

2. Secure vehicle

3. Never leave keys inside

In addition to practicing these prevention methodologies, drivers should park in areas that are well-lit, near surveillance cameras (if available), and near heavy foot and vehicle traffic. The more thieves feel threatened by detection, the less likely they are to focus on targets in such areas.

The Texas Auto Theft Prevention Authority (ATPA) was created by the Texas Legislature in 1991 to fund programs to reduce vehicle thefts.  The passing of House Bill 1887 in 2007 expanded the scope of the agency to include automobile burglary and added that term to the Authority’s title.  For more information on the ABTPA, auto burglary, vehicle theft, prevention, statistics, contacts for any of ABTPA’s 29 Texas vehicle crime task forces, public service information, or to schedule a presentation by task force personnel, call 800-CAR-WATCH or visit the ABTPA website at www.txwatchyourcar.com.

Aldi Grocery and Wendy’s Coming to Paris

wendysIn 2015 Paris will see the opening of an Aldi grocery store and a Wendy’s restaurant.

Aldi will be located in the old Hasting’s building in the Paris Town Center.  City Manager John Godwin said the grocery chain is hoping to open in April 2015.

“It’s a chain that’s expanding and they saw Paris as a good market.  They should be really good in town.  They’ll be a real asset.  They were hoping to open this time this year but had some delays on the corporate level.  Currently they’re remodeling the front and the back for accessibility and storage.  They told us last year they were coming, and got the property platted.  In the last few weeks we’ve confirmed they are still coming,” he said.

There was some concern about whether or not Aldi would be building a store after all because plans had been put on hold, but it proved to just be an undisclosed delay.

The restaurant chain Wendy’s will open some time in 2015 as well.  It will be located near the La Quinta Inn on northeast loop 286.

Regarding the site where Wendy’s will be built, City Manager Godwin said, “The property was re-zoned by the city council last week.  They’ve still got a good bit of work to do because they’ve got some drainage issues there.  There used to be a flood way that goes through the middle of the property.  You’re not allowed to build on a flood way.  You can build on a flood plain but not a flood way.  The flood way’s been moved but FEMA has to approve a map revision. That’s what they’re waiting on. That’s been in front of FEMA for a couple of months.”

Once the map revision has been approved, Wendy’s construction will begin soon after in 2015.
